Good first lesson deal

I was looking for some Conversational English practice and saw Preply. Got a big discount on my first lesson, which made trying it out really easy on the wallet. Felt like good value for what I paid to test the waters.

Spanish for travel worked out

I decided to try Preply for Spanish for travel before a trip. The process of finding a tutor was pretty easy; I just filtered by what I needed and watched a few intro videos. I booked a trial lesson, which was a good way to see if the tutor's style fit me. After that, I bought a package of hours. The lessons were productive, my tutor was always prepared and punctual. I mostly used their online classroom, which worked fine for video calls and sharing documents. I did have one question about rescheduling a lesson once and used their support chat; they got back to me within an hour, so that was helpful. It took about 3 weeks to feel more confident speaking before my trip, which is what I was hoping for. No major complaints, it did what I needed.

Decent for Business English

I signed up for Business English lessons. Booking was straightforward and I found a tutor quickly. The lessons themselves were good, though sometimes the connection on their online classroom was a bit spotty. It wasn't a huge issue, but it did interrupt things once or twice. Overall, it's a solid service for the price, just wished the platform was a tiny bit more stable.

How long does it take for a refund to process if I cancel my subscription or unused lessons?

C Cleo 2 months ago
Mine took a few business days to hit my bank account. It wasn't instant, but it wasn't weeks either.

S Steve S. 1 month ago
I think it varies a bit depending on your bank, but usually within a week. I had some unused lessons refunded and it was pretty quick, maybe 3-5 days.

Are there any student discounts for Preply? I'm a uni student and every bit helps.

C Cody G. 2 months ago
Not sure about a specific student discount program directly from Preply, but sometimes referral codes from other students give good first lesson deals. Worth checking around.

I haven't seen a dedicated student discount page. Your best bet is probably finding a referral link or looking for those seasonal sales everyone talks about.

Is Preply generally cheaper than something like Italki? I'm trying to compare options for learning Japanese.

B Beth 2 months ago
It's hard to say definitively cheaper, it really depends on the tutor's rates on both platforms. I found good deals on Preply for my English lessons, but I've seen expensive ones too. You gotta browse.

I think Preply often has a wider range of prices, so you might find more budget-friendly options if you really dig. Italki felt a little more uniform to me, but that's just my impression.

I need to take an IELTS exam soon, does Preply have specific tutors for that? Or is it more general language learning?

N Neil Silva 2 months ago
Definitely! You can filter tutors by what they specialize in. I saw a ton for IELTS prep when I was looking for TOEFL tutors.

S Shane 2 months ago
Yeah, just use the filters when you search. Plenty of tutors focus on exam prep like IELTS or TOEFL. They usually mention it right in their profile.

Anyone know if Preply ever does like, big sales? trying to get started with some French lessons but hoping to snag a deal.

M Mark B. 2 months ago
They often have first lesson discounts, sometimes even 100% off if you find a good referral link. Also, watch out for Black Friday or Cyber Monday, I heard they do stuff then.

W Wendy Bennett 2 months ago
Yeah, definitely look for a referral code for your first lesson. Beyond that, buying lessons in bulk usually gets you a better hourly rate too, so that's kinda like a deal.

Do they have trial lessons? And how long are they usually?

T Todd Kim 2 months ago
Yep, most tutors offer trial lessons. They're usually 25 or 30 minutes, I think. It's a good way to see if you click with the tutor.

J Jared 2 months ago
My trial lesson was 30 mins. Just enough time to chat a bit and see their teaching style. Some are free with a referral code, which is cool.

what if I don't like my tutor after a few lessons? can I switch without losing money?

L Laura 2 months ago
Yeah, you can totally change tutors. If you're not happy, you can usually get a refund for unused lessons or transfer the credit to a new tutor. I did that once, it was pretty smooth.

T Tom L. 1 month ago
I think they're pretty good about letting you switch. The first lesson is kinda a trial anyway. Just reach out to support if you have issues, but it should be fine to find someone new.

Thinking of trying Preply for some conversational English practice. How does the payment thing work? Is it per lesson or like a subscription?

G Greg L. 2 months ago
It's a subscription model, kinda. You buy hours, and then lessons deduct from that. They have different plans where buying more hours makes the hourly rate cheaper.
2
G Greg Doyle 2 months ago
Yeah, you pick a plan, like 4 hours a month or whatever, and you pay monthly. If you don't use all your hours, I think some roll over but there's a limit, so check that.
